Direct Loan Entrance Counseling Required

Direct loan entrance counseling is required for first-time direct loan borrowers (subsidized and/or unsubsidized).This counseling session and quiz, which is on the U.S. Department of Education's Direct Loan Servicing website, helps you develop a budget for managing educational expenses and understand your loan responsibilities.

Note: You must complete the counseling before your loan will be disbursed to your account.

Direct Loan Exit Counseling Required

Direct Loan "Exit" Counseling is required for direct loan borrowers (subsidized and/or unsubsidized) who are graduating or dropping below half-time enrollment. This counseling session, which is on the U.S. Department of Education's Direct Loan Servicing site helps you understand your rights and responsibilities in repayment. You must use your Department of Education FSA ID to access this counseling session.

Federal Direct Loan Online Master Promissory Note (MPN) Required

Before you begin the online MPN process, please make sure to have the following information available to you. Having the information available prior to the online MPN application will help you complete the process successfully.

  • Your FSA ID issued to you by the Department of Education.
  • Your Social Security number
  • Your driver's license number
  • Your permanent address and telephone number
  • Information for two references, including name, addresses and telephone numbers

Please note: The MPN must be completed before loan funds are able to be credited to the student account. All loan proceeds can disburse no earlier than 10 days before the start of classes.

Loan History

You can review Direct Loan and Federal Grant history through secure login to the Federal Student Aid portal. This site is created to collect information from schools and lenders so aid can be more efficiently processed. It is updated every 30-60 days by the schools and the lender, so recent disbursements may not show immediately.

Note: Information regarding a student's loan amounts and loan types will be submitted to the Federal Student Aid system. The system allows other guaranty agencies, lenders and other authorized users to access their database

Information on Repaying Your Loan

You cannot cancel a loan disbursement if the designated time period described above has already passed. Instead, you can repay the loan disbursement directly by contacting the loan holder which can be found by accessing the Federal Student Aid system. You will be responsible for any interest that may have accrued and/or any loan fees.

Loan Consolidation

A Direct Consolidation Loan Program is available allowing you to consolidate (combine) one or more of the eligible federal education loans into one loan. For more details and information, go to the student loans website.
