General

Geography

  • Rick Powell Memorial Scholarship (Banner Fund R62463)

    Founded by Lisa Powell on behalf of the parents and children of Rick Powell, this expendable fund was established to enable students in the Geography Program to attend professional conferences.

    Criteria

    • Must be admitted to end enrolled in the Geography Program at either the undergraduate or graduate level
    • Preference will be given to students majoring in GIS
    • Preference will be given to students who have been selected to present at the conference

    To apply, students must submit a brief one-page letter of application noting the conference they plan to attend, whether they have been selected to present (poster or verbal presentation), where the conference is located, the scholarship amount being requested and a brief explanation about why they’d like to attend.  Student must also submit a brief one-page budget detailing in full the amount they are requesting. Award sizes will vary based on application information.

  • IGRE and Geography and Geology GIS Research Fund for International Students (01670)

    Created in 2009 by Dr. Yichun Xie – director of the Institute for Geographic Research and Education - the purpose of the fund is for:
    • Supporting research activities of international GIS students in IGRE and geography and geology,
    • Sponsoring presentations at national or state professional conferences concerning GIS research and application by international GIS students in IGRE and geography and geology.

  • Geographic Information Systems (00865)

    Created in 1997, the purpose of the fund is to develop a geographic information system (GIS) for the Geography and Geology Department. Funds will be used to purchase necessary hardware and software to run the computerized system and to train system operators.

  • Mark Jefferson Geography Endowed Scholarship (00333)

    As the Geography and Geology Department’s oldest existing scholarship, an endowment was established by students, faculty and friends in appreciation of Mark Jefferson, who served as head of the Geography Department from 1901–1939. 

    Criteria

    • Senior who plans to do graduate work in geography.
    • Other factors being equal, student who has completed all work for geography major.
    • Must receive the unanimous approval of staff members of the Geography Department who have completed two years of service at EMU.

  • Marilyn Larson Jacob Expendable Scholarship Historic Preservation (01525)

    The Marilyn Larson Jacob Scholarship in Historic Preservation (created in 2007) is intended to assist graduate-level students in the Historic Preservation Program who meet the following criteria:
    • Student must be admitted into the master's degree program in historic preservation.
    • Student must be sincerely interested in historic preservation (any program area) and planning to pursue a career in the field of historic preservation.
    • Student must write a short essay explaining their interest in historic preservation and their plans for a career in the field.

  • 30th Anniversary Fund Historic Preservation Program (01671)

    Created in 2009, this fund is designated for use for the historic preservation collection at Halle Library on the EMU campus, as well as for other activities related to the program’s 30th anniversary.

  • Michael D. Brown Endowed Scholarship in Historic Preservation (01546)

    The Michael D. Brown Scholarship in Historic Preservation (created in 2007) is intended to assist graduate-level students in the Historic Preservation Program who meet the following criteria:
    • Student must be admitted into the master's degree program in historic preservation.
    • Student must be sincerely interested in historic preservation (any program area) and planning to pursue a career in the field of historic preservation.
    • Student must write a short essay explaining their interest in historic preservation and their plans for a career in the field.
    • Student must have a GPA of 3.0 or above.

  • Marshall McLennan Expendable Historic Preservation (01496)

    When Historic Preservation Program Director Marshall McLennan retired in 1999 after twenty years of leadership, students and alumni/ae established the Marshall S. McLennan Fund to honor his extraordinary service to the university and to enrich the academic experience of students in the program. Thanks to the generosity of many graduates and friends of the program, the McLennan Fund is able to help our students develop their academic, professional and networking skills in a number of areas which are not supported by the normal university budgeting process.

    The McLennan Fund Advisory Board encourages you to consider whether a financial award from this fund might support you in an educational or professional endeavor of your choosing. The board envisions that disbursements from the fund’s income could help students in the following ways:

    • Conference scholarships to assist with registration, travel and hotel expenses
    • Travel awards to support academic research outside of the Ypsilanti area
    • Grants to assist with the publication or presentation of academic papers
    • Research grants for final projects

    Created in 2004, the fund has the designated purpose and use of:

    • Funding for academic and program related activities in historic preservation
    • Support for students who wish to attend national or state historic preservation meetings
    • Sponsorship of lectures with nationally known speakers
    • Support for the publication of important student work

  • Robert M. Ward Urban Regional Planning Program Endowed Scholarship (01036)

    Formerly known as the Urban and Regional Planning Program Endowed Scholarship, the endowed fund was renamed in 2004 as the Robert M. Ward Urban and Regional Planning Program Endowed Scholarship in recognition of his significant role in the founding of the URP program.

    This fund is to be used for scholarships for students studying Urban and Regional Planning. It will be awarded based on three criteria:

    • GPA (EMU)
    • Activity
    • Written statement of need

    Selection of recipient(s) will be made by a selection committee made up of the department head, director of program (undergraduate), graduate program advisor and a member of the Program's Professionals Advisory Committee.
