Reading

NOTE: The undergrad programs are phasing out Fall 2021 - being replaced by Elementary-Early Childhood Teaching and Learning (with Certification). Courses available for this program will be offered through Fall 2027. For information about the new elementary, Early Childhood Teaching and Learning program with certification, visit the catalog or schedule an appointment with an advisor.

The Reading Program at Eastern Michigan University offers programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Both programs lead to state endorsements. Graduates of both programs are finding jobs as classroom teachers, chapter one reading teachers, and reading specialists.

Undergraduate Level

The undergraduate reading major/minor along with the liberal arts requirements lead to elementary teacher certification for K-8 grades in a classroom teaching all subjects. The student will also earn the BT endorsement for the elementary classroom-reading teacher upon successful completion of the state endorsement test. The major requires 27-30 credit hours; the minor requires 21 credit hours along with completion of an additional content minor.

Graduate Level

Students who complete the 33-hour Master’s of Arts in Reading degree are eligible for the BR Reading Specialist endorsement from the state. The M.A. in Reading is approved by the Michigan Department of Education for the preparation of educational personnel and nationally recognized by the International Literacy Association. Our graduates are finding jobs as reading specialists and literacy coaches.

Resources

The Annabelle Sumera Reading room, located in 212 Porter Building, contains a resource library of current trade books and instructional materials in literacy. These, combined with up-to-date technology, helps prepare future and current literacy teachers to take their place in our schools.

NOTE: The program is currently under revision and will be fully online beginning in January 2016.
